Aviation Medicals

CASA approved aviation medical examinations, close to home.

If you hold or are applying for an Australian pilot licence or air traffic control certificate, you will need a medical examination carried out by a CASA approved Medical Examiner. Our GPs are authorised to conduct aviation medicals right here at our Gisborne and Woodend clinics, so you can take care of your medical requirements locally without having to travel to the city.

What to Expect

Before your appointment, it is worth gathering any relevant medical records, a list of current medications and details of any recent illnesses, surgeries or hospital admissions. If you wear glasses or contact lenses, bring them along as your vision will be assessed as part of the examination.

Your GP will conduct a thorough physical examination covering the areas required by CASA for your class of medical. This includes checks of your cardiovascular system, vision, hearing, respiratory function and general health. Your GP will also ask about your medical history and any conditions that may be relevant to your fitness to fly.

Once the examination is complete, your GP will complete the relevant CASA documentation. If everything is in order, your medical certificate will be processed through CASA in the usual way. If anything comes up during the examination that needs further investigation, your GP will explain what is required and what the next steps are.

We recommend booking a dedicated aviation medical appointment rather than a standard consultation as a specific time allocation is required. Please mention which class of medical you need when you book.

How We Help

  • Our GPs are authorised by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority to conduct aviation medical examinations. We carry out Class 1, Class 2 and Class 3 medicals depending on your licence type and requirements. If you are unsure which class of medical you need, check your licence requirements or contact CASA directly before booking.

  • Class 1 medicals are required for commercial pilots including those holding an Air Transport Pilot Licence or Commercial Pilot Licence. This is the most comprehensive level of aviation medical and covers a thorough assessment of your physical and mental health, vision, hearing and cardiovascular fitness.

  • Class 2 medicals are required for private pilots holding a Private Pilot Licence or Recreational Pilot Licence. The assessment covers similar areas to a Class 1 medical but with slightly different standards and requirements.

  • Class 3 medicals are required for air traffic controllers. Your GP will assess your fitness for the specific demands of an air traffic control role in line with CASA requirements.

  • Aviation medicals need to be renewed at regular intervals depending on your licence class and age. Our GPs can help you stay on top of your renewal schedule and make sure your medical is completed and submitted well before your current certificate expires.
