Back Pain Clinic

Practical, evidence-based care for back pain that is getting in the way of your life. Run by Dr Jinx who has years of neurosurgical experience.

Back pain is one of the most common reasons people visit a GP, and one of the most misunderstood. It can range from a dull ache that comes and goes to severe pain that affects your ability to work, sleep and move through your day. Whatever you are dealing with, our GPs take back pain seriously. We focus on understanding the cause, not just managing the symptom, and work with you on a practical plan to get you moving and feeling better.

What to Expect

Your first back pain appointment will focus on understanding your situation properly. Your GP will ask about your pain, your history and how it is affecting your day to day life. They may examine your back and assess your movement and reflexes as part of the consultation.

From there, your GP will talk you through what they think is going on and what they recommend. This might include advice on activity and movement, a referral to a physiotherapist, a medication plan or further investigation if warranted. You will leave the appointment with a clear understanding of your situation and a plan for what happens next.

If you have been managing back pain for a long time and have not found a solution that works, it is worth booking a longer appointment so your GP has time to go through your history properly and consider all the options available to you.

How We Help

  • Back pain has many causes and not all of them are obvious. Our GPs take the time to assess your pain properly, including understanding when it started, what makes it better or worse, and how it is affecting your daily life. Where relevant, your GP may arrange imaging or pathology to get a clearer picture of what is going on.

  • The research on back pain has evolved significantly over the years. We know now that rest alone is rarely the answer and that staying active, with the right guidance, is usually the better approach. Our GPs provide treatment recommendations grounded in current evidence, including advice on movement, lifestyle changes and pain management.

  • For patients dealing with significant pain, medication can play an important role in managing discomfort while other treatments take effect. Our GPs can prescribe appropriate pain relief and review your medication over time to make sure it is working and that you are not relying on it longer than necessary.

  • Physiotherapy, exercise physiology and other allied health services play an important role in back pain recovery and long term management. Our GPs can refer you to the right allied health professional and, where eligible, arrange a GP Management Plan that gives you access to Medicare rebated allied health sessions.

  • For patients who have been living with back pain for a long time, management looks a little different. Our GPs can help you develop a long term approach that focuses on maintaining function, managing flare-ups and improving your quality of life over time.

  • Most back pain resolves with appropriate care, but some cases do warrant further investigation or specialist input. Our GPs know when to refer and can arrange specialist consultations where needed. If your GP thinks something needs a closer look, they will tell you clearly and make sure things move quickly.
