Dr Bass Abi Haila has one of the more unusual paths to general practice you will come across. After completing an undergraduate degree in Laboratory Medicine majoring in Microbiology and Haematology, he spent time working in haemato-oncology and virology laboratories across the UK and Belgium before deciding medicine was where he wanted to be. He graduated from Griffith University in Queensland in 2010 and went on to train across various Victorian hospitals, initially working towards a specialisation in infectious disease before finding his home in general practice.

That scientific background is not just interesting background colour. It genuinely informs the way Bass approaches infectious disease, travel medicine and immunisation, areas he remains deeply passionate about and where his laboratory expertise gives him a level of insight most GPs simply do not have.

Beyond his infectious disease focus, Bass has a broad clinical interest spanning men's health, sexual health, chronic disease management and minor surgical procedures. He has also completed advanced injectables and laser training, bringing cosmetic medicine expertise to his general practice work.

Outside of work Bass is a landscape and astro-photographer, a self-confessed tech enthusiast and a keen cook, and still manages to come down with the occasional travel bug despite knowing better than most what that actually involves.

Bass works at the Gisborne clinic.
