Healthy Heart Check

A simple check that could make a significant difference to your long term health.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in Australia, and many people have no idea their risk is elevated until something goes wrong. A Healthy Heart Check is a Medicare-funded assessment available to eligible patients that looks at your overall cardiovascular risk and helps you and your GP understand what, if anything, needs to change. It is straightforward, takes around thirty minutes and could be one of the most useful appointments you have all year.

A healthcare professional performs an electrocardiogram (ECG) on a patient by attaching electrodes to the chest.

What to Expect

A Healthy Heart Check is a dedicated appointment with our clinic nurse and your GP, not a quick add-on to a standard consultation. When you arrive, our clinic nurses will go through your health history, take your blood pressure, conduct an ECG if appropriate, review your blood test results and ask about your lifestyle and family history. From there they will calculate your cardiovascular risk score and talk you through what it means in plain language.

You will then speak with your GP regarding these results and formulate a plan to manage your cardiovascular health. If everything looks good, you will leave with peace of mind and a clear picture of where your health is at. If something needs attention, you will leave with a plan. Either way, you will know more walking out than you did walking in.

The appointment takes around thirty minutes. Please let our team know when you book that you are coming in for a Healthy Heart Check so we can allocate the right amount of time and advise on whether a blood test is needed beforehand.

How We Help

  • A Healthy Heart Check is a Medicare-funded cardiovascular risk assessment for eligible patients. Your GP will look at a range of factors that contribute to heart disease risk including your blood pressure, cholesterol levels, blood sugar, weight, smoking status, family history and lifestyle. From there, your GP will calculate your overall cardiovascular risk and talk you through what it means and what to do about it.

How often you should have a skin check depends on your skin type, history and sun exposure. As a general guide, once a year is recommended for most adults, and more frequently if you have a history of skin cancer, a large number of moles or a fair complexion. Your GP can advise what is right for you.

  • The Medicare-funded Healthy Heart Check is available to patients aged 45 and over who have not had a previous cardiovascular event such as a heart attack or stroke. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients are eligible from age 30. If you are not sure whether you are eligible, give your preferred clinic a call and we can help you work it out before you book.

  • If your results show an elevated risk, your GP will work with you on a plan to bring that risk down. This might include lifestyle changes around diet, exercise and smoking, medication where appropriate, or more regular monitoring going forward. The point of the check is not to alarm you but to give you and your GP the information needed to act early, when it matters most.

  • A Healthy Heart Check usually involves a review of recent blood test results including cholesterol and blood sugar levels. Your GP may ask you to have a blood test done before your appointment so the results are available on the day. Our reception team can advise on this when you book.

  • For patients who already have elevated cardiovascular risk or a known heart condition, our GPs provide ongoing monitoring and management. Regular check-ins, medication reviews and lifestyle support are all part of keeping your heart health on track over the long term.
