Minor Surgical Procedures
Common procedures carried out safely and efficiently at your local GP clinic.
Many procedures that patients assume require a specialist or hospital visit can be carried out right here at Neal Street Medical Centre. Our GPs are experienced in a range of minor surgical procedures, meaning you can get things seen to quickly, locally and in a familiar environment you already trust. No long waits for specialist referrals, no unfamiliar settings. Just straightforward care from your GP.
What to Expect
For most minor procedures, you will not need to do anything special to prepare. Your GP will let you know in advance if there is anything specific to be aware of before your appointment, such as avoiding blood thinning medications or arranging for someone to drive you home.
On the day, your GP will explain exactly what is involved before anything begins and make sure you are comfortable. Local anaesthetic is used for all procedures that involve any cutting or removal, so pain during the procedure itself is minimal for most patients. Your GP or nurse will dress the area afterwards and give you clear instructions on how to care for the wound at home and when to come back if needed.
If a tissue sample has been taken, your GP will contact you with the results and let you know whether any further treatment or monitoring is required.
When a Referral is Needed
Most minor procedures can be handled at the clinic, but there are circumstances where a specialist referral is the more appropriate option. If a lesion is in a difficult location, is larger than can be safely managed in a GP setting, or if the findings from a biopsy indicate something that needs specialist attention, your GP will refer you promptly and make sure you are seen without unnecessary delay.
We are very fortunate to have Dr Rizwan Sheikh (Plastic Surgeon) who visits our clinic and provides care for complex lesions.
How We Help
-
If your GP identifies a mole, cyst, lipoma or other skin lesion that needs to be removed, this can usually be taken care of at the clinic. Your GP will numb the area with a local anaesthetic before removing the lesion, so the procedure itself is comfortable. Any tissue removed is sent to a laboratory for analysis as a matter of routine, and your GP will follow up with you on the results.
-
If a spot or lesion needs further investigation before a treatment decision is made, your GP can take a small tissue sample for laboratory analysis. This is a quick, straightforward procedure carried out under local anaesthetic. Your GP will explain what they are looking for and follow up with you once the results are back.
-
Sebaceous cysts and other superficial cysts can often be removed at the clinic under local anaesthetic. Your GP will assess the cyst, confirm it is suitable for in-clinic removal and talk you through the procedure before proceeding.
-
Our GPs and nursing team provide wound assessment, cleaning, dressing and suturing for lacerations and injuries that need attention. If you have a wound that needs looking at, please call your preferred clinic as soon as possible so we can advise on the best course of action.
-
Ingrown toenails can be extremely painful and are prone to infection if left untreated. Our GPs can assess and treat ingrown toenails, including partial nail removal under local anaesthetic where needed, to provide lasting relief.
-
Blocked ears caused by wax build-up can affect hearing and cause discomfort. Our GPs can assess whether ear syringing is appropriate and carry out the procedure at the clinic if so.
-
For straightforward fractures, our GPs can apply and manage plaster casts and provide follow-up care in conjunction with our specialist colleagues at the Gisborne Specialist Centre where needed.
