What to Expect
Your first step is to book a consultation to talk through whether an IUD is the right choice for you. This is not the insertion appointment itself. It is a chance to ask questions, discuss your health history and make sure you are comfortable with the decision before anything happens.
Once you have decided to go ahead, your GP will book you in for a dedicated insertion appointment. On the day, your GP will take you through the procedure step by step, check in with you throughout and make sure you feel as comfortable as possible. The insertion itself takes only a few minutes, though the full appointment is longer to allow time for preparation and aftercare advice.
Most women are able to drive themselves home afterwards, though some prefer to bring someone with them. Your GP will advise you on what to expect after the procedure and when to call us if you have any concerns.
How We Help
-
There are two main types of IUD available in Australia. The hormonal IUD, most commonly the Mirena, releases a small amount of progestogen and can last up to five to eight years depending on the device. It is also commonly used to manage heavy periods and endometriosis symptoms. The copper IUD is hormone-free and can last up to ten years, making it a popular choice for women who prefer a non-hormonal option. Your GP will talk you through both and help you work out which is the better fit for your circumstances.
-
IUD insertions are carried out by our experienced GPs right here at the clinic. The procedure itself is straightforward and typically takes around fifteen to twenty minutes in total. Your GP will explain exactly what is involved beforehand so you know what to expect and can ask any questions you have. You are welcome to bring someone with you for support.
-
There are a few things you can do before your appointment to make the procedure as comfortable as possible. Your GP will give you specific guidance when you book, including advice on timing your appointment within your cycle and whether to take pain relief beforehand. Please make sure you book a dedicated IUD appointment rather than a standard consultation as a specific time allocation is required.
-
After your IUD is inserted, your GP will let you know what to expect in the days that follow and what to watch for. A follow-up appointment is usually recommended four to six weeks after insertion to check that everything is sitting correctly. Your GP will arrange this before you leave.
-
When your IUD reaches the end of its lifespan or if you decide you would like it removed sooner, our GPs can take care of that at the clinic as well. If you would like a replacement inserted at the same time, that can usually be arranged in the same appointment.
